Committee Meetings

Friends of PNS meet monthly on the Fourth Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the lower level of City Hall

Our meetings are informal, come as you are.  Due to the variability of our members' schedules, we sometimes move the date or location of our meetings.  If in doubt, please send a e-mail or Call Director Jim Reed at 741-0820, and we will let you know our plans for the next meeting.

White Alloe Allies -

The original members of the original P.N.S. committee decided that "Friends of Parkville Nature Sanctuary" sounded too banal.  Therefore, it was decided that the group of supporters would be named after the French-Canadian hunter and trapper named Alloe who was active in this valley in the 1800's.  Legend has it that he lived among and traded with the local Native Americans, especially the Kickapoo and Delaware on the Kansas side of the river, and the Sac and Fox on the Missouri side, who had lived here for many generations before any "white" men showed up.

The Kickapoos called him "White Alloe," and named the stream on which he lived after him.  After the white settlers had moved in and driven off, killed, or otherwise "civilized" the local Native Americans, they decided to keep the  name of the creek "White Alloe."  This is the creek which flows through the Parkville Nature Sanctuary.

Since "White Alloe Allies" has a certain alliterative quality, the committee decided to call the supporters of Parkville Nature Sanctuary that.  They also decided to call the newsletter the "White Alloe Watch."   If that explanation  doesn't inspire you to join us, I don't know what will.

Volunteer Opportunities:  Many projects throughout the year, from trail maintenance to special events.  Scout and School Community Service requirements and merit badges are fulfilled here routinely.

Current Project:  In December, we have Trek with Santa
