Eagles Sighted in PNS - Eagle Scouts, that is...
  By Jim Reed, Director

Over the years, many Eagle Scout candidates have contributed hard work and creative thinking to the development of the Sanctuary. Scouts have blazed trails, constructed erosion control devices, created a butterfly garden, erected bat houses, installed benches and bridges, and put down tons of wood chips to keep the trails walkable.

In 1998, a new loop trail through the White Alloe Creek Conservation Area (WACCA) on the east side of the sanctuary was blazed, constructed and chipped by Shane Bleyenberg, Tim Reed, Caleb Graves, Mathew Hampton, Brett Hatcher, Matt Wyrick and Michael Tucker. Joey Stokes also installed two benches. At the base of Riss Lake dam Kevin Shillingburg and Joe Parvin completed the raised walkways on the west side to keep the trail passable during wet weather.

Other projects completed in 1998 include:

Girl Scout troop #704 chipped the south end of the trail along the creek by the soccer field.

Cub Scout pack #273 cleaned trash from the trails where recycled chips had been used.

•Thirty Park Hill High School National Honor Society students blazed a significant section of the south WACCA trail.

Northland Optimist Club had twenty volunteers cleaning the butterfly garden, constructing steps to the root cellar and installing a bench they donated.

•The Park Hill Environmental Club picked up trash throughout the sanctuary.

A big THANK YOU!

to all who donated their time in 1998 to the Parkville Nature Sanctuary!
