  What's new at Parkville Nature Sanctuary

  There are a number of new additions and progress that has been made at the Parkville Nature Sanctuary.  The following is a list of what to look for the next time you are on the trails:
  • Leased White Alloe Creek Conservation Area from Missouri Dept. of Conservation.
  • Completion of the North WACCA trail.
  • Beginning of a half mile of the ADA trail
  • Good start on the South WACCA trail
  • StreamTeam 1000 events October, 1997
  • StreamTeam has monitored and tested the White Alloe Creek each season
  • boardwalk built in November, 1997
  • Addition of 2 Bat houses
  • Eight Eagle Scout projects completed, four more to be completed by year-end
  • Northland Optimist Group workday furthered work toward completion of the Root Cellar project. They also donated and installed a bench next to the Root Cellar project.  They also donated and installed a bench next to the Root Cellar, in addition to maintenance of the Butterfly Garden.
  • Mike Freeman donated and installed a bench on the Waterfall trail.
  • 3 additional benches have been donated by Susan McDaniel, Denise Chevalier, and Kirk Moore and Kevin Button, are to be installed
  • Silent Auction held generating $1,357 which will be used on our new ADA trail
  • 3-Day "Day Camp" held for 8-10 year old children from June 15-17, 1998
  • Erwin Carney designated as Project Coordinator on a volunteer basis, and honored at the March City awards banquet
 
  In addition to Eagle Scout projects, the following organizations have conducted projects at Parkville Nature Sanctuary to assist in the development and maintenance of the trails:
  • Park Hill National Merit Scholars
  • Pop Warner Baseball Club
  • Girl Scout Troop 704
  • Cub Pack 273
  • Park Hill Environmental Club
 
  Since August, 1997, monthly interpretive hikes conducted at Parkville Nature Sanctuary have included the following topics:
  • Wild Edibles
  • Beavers and the new boardwalk
  • Hibernation
  • Exploring the New WACCA Trails
  • Reptile Exhibit featuring Scott Maxey, Missouri Department of Conservation Herpetologist
  • Wildflowers
  • Trees
 
  There are also interpretive hikes for private groups which have been conducted for:
  • Audubon Club and KC Outdoors Club
  • Platte Woods United Methodist Church
  • St. Joseph grade school science teacher
  • Thomas Hart Benton Sierra Club
  • Park Hill Ecology Club
